I read the section: The Distracted Reader. The author stated that there is great potential in electronic reading - that there is a wealth of information available almost instantly. The problem is that all that information is so distracting! If a reader doesn't know how to evaluate/use the mass of info provided, it will just distract them & make reading & comprehension more difficult. So students need to be literate in electronic media, not just able to read.

ReplyDeleteI thought this passage was very relevant. Today we have so many choices in reading, multimedia and general entertainment that we may be constantly entertained in our free time. All entertainments/information is available with little or no wait time. This condition has led us to a society where we have very little time/inclination for contemplation. Why contemplate an article you just read- when linking videos of kittens sleeping or baby birds chirping are only a click away. To achieve some contemplation time, as people we will have to consciously seek out the time and carve it out of our days.
In the passage, The Distracted Reader, the author suggests that students need to develop critical and "self monitoring skills" to evaluate web links for really meaningful information. I have experienced information overload on many occasions and it has stalled my writing.
